How to paint your garden
Join me in the garden to make art. This is our haven, our retreat. Lush lawns, beautiful flowers, still ponds. Bees humming busily amongst the bloom. The sun casting cool shadows across brilliant green. Each day we’ll work from a different photograph and I’ll show you how to paint your garden.
Let’s capture the moment in paint on canvas. Booking below. €10
How to paint a Wine Glass
We’ll try to capture sunlight in a bottle – from the fruits of the vineyard to the glass. Each day we’ll work on a different aspect using a different photograph reference. A ‘nature morte’ or two and a landscape.
Let’s prepare and crack open a vintage Chateau Neuf du Pape in paint on canvas. Booking below. €10
Buy oil paintings directly from McSherryStudio.com
You can now buy oil paintings from here. I paint a little demonstration still life or landscape painting at every class, as many of you know. It’s a good way to warm up, introduce new concepts or just repeat and emphasise the process of painting. Many don’t ever get finished but often I work on them after class if I feel that they’re working particularly well. Consequently, I end up with a large collection of these oils studies…and I would like to offer you a chance to acquire them.
I’m proud of all of them.
Since they are my studies, I tend not to put them in galleries as I feel they compete with the other artworks I do; the narrative paintings and absurdist work. So I’ve compiled the best of them into an online gallery on this web site.
If you’d like to invest in a small work of original art for yourself, or gift one, you can buy them here and I’ll either send it out to you or you can collect it from my studio. Some of them are framed, most not. If you want a frame, it’s best to allow a week for framing.

Plein Air Painting at Culture Night Dublin September 2019
I’m not officially part of this coming Friday’s Culture Night Dublin programme. I always forget to work it into my plans – and my studio is too far away from the centre of town to include it on the itinerary.
However; instead I’m going to do a bit of guerrilla participation and head down to the South Georgian Quarter (the area between Grafton Street and Merrion Square) to paint a streetscape nocturne. Most likely in Molesworth Street but I’ll post up on Facebook my exact location once I’ve settled on it and if you’re around, do say hello. I’ll get set up at about 6.30pm and paint away until I get tired or arrested…
I really hope to see you!
Paint small; paint oils; paint often!

My first painting retreat at the ICA headquarters; An Grianán, in County Louth was last weekend. We had a wonderful time. Despite the weather, which was changeable as you can see, we all got a lot of work done -either outside or in our art room.
As ever, I did plenty of demonstrations. We were very well fed, An Grianán is famous for the quality and generosity of the food. We’re all going to need a week just to digest!
So, thank you to all who attended and made it such a fun event. I hope you gained some new techniques, approaches and confidence to paint landscapes en plein air and I hope to see you at the next event.
