An Art Auction!

Hi all,
I’ve relaunched www.McSherry.ie which is my professional web site (for my illustration work, fine art and prints, as opposed to McSherryStudio.com which is just for teaching).

Anyway, to celebrate, I’m holding an online art auction and the inaugural auction is for my still life daily painting in oils, ‘A Jar of Sunshine’ (5″x7″ unframed), which has a very low reserve -just €55!

If you’d like to bid and perhaps get an original oils painting in time for Christmas visit wwwMcSherry.ie and take a look.

The hammer will fall in just 10 days

181017 Demonstration of Alla Prima Landscape Painting from a Photo

A demonstration from this morning’s art class of Alla Prima Landscape Painting from a Photo. The object is to try to have the painting look like it was done from life. So don’t get drawn into slavishly copying the photographic reference. Palette: Titanium white, Cadmium yellow pale hue, permanent rose, cobalt blue, ivory black and burnt umber for the background wash and drawing and notan. I used this demo to introduce the concept of a ‘Notan’. See the definition below from Wikipedia. I think it’s a useful technique to use, especially in en plein air painting.

This took 30 minutes but the video is compressed down to about 1m 30s.

Nōtan (濃淡) is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark elements as they are placed next to the other in the composition of art and imagery.

New Term of Art Classes starts Oct 23, 24 and 25 2018. New Wednesday Morning Class!

From this mornings art class; a video of the demonstration of alla prima (wet into wet) painting. I used the Winton oils paints that I recommend to my beginner students: Titanium white, Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Permanent Rose, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black and Burnt Umber (as an extra). The demonstration took about 25 minutes but I spent an hour after class adding details and working on the white ground.
A new term of art classes starts in my studio on October 23rd.
