Overview: During this weekend we will explore the local landscape to draw and paint alla prima studies.

On Friday afternoon, we’ll explore the area and make quick sketches in charcoal on paper – or you can leap right in and begin small, quick painted studies.

We have a full day on Saturday and I’ll begin the day with a demonstration oils study, showing how I compose, block out and complete a painting. I’ll demonstrate brushwork, texture and simplified description to get effective results. You’ll then work on your own for the afternoon.

On Sunday morning, we will look at using the studies we have already made, either to do extra work on them or to make complete new paintings in -studio using the studies as notes.

Come and join me at An Grianán, home of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association. It’s a glorious 18th century house that has been transformed into a cultural and educational centre. Set in the beautiful rolling hills of the Boyne Valley, colour pic

About An Grianán An Grianán is of immense historical significance with its original form dating back over 220 years. This beautiful stately home was built in the 18th Century by the McClintock family and called Newtown House. In 1852 it was sold to a Drogheda merchant and shipbuilder called Ralph Smyth and in the early 1920’s it was bought by Helen Lentaigne, who allowed the newly constituted Irish Countrywomen’s Association to use Newtown House as a venue for one of the first ICA Summer Schools during the 1930’s. In 1945 the Irish Tourist Board renovated the premises and opened the house as Tearman Hotel. There are plenty of places to visit but you won’t have time for that; you’ll be painting the gorgeous scenery around the locality!
